Observations on Auras: Hand Numbness

One of the aura effects that I have been getting for several decades has been a progressing numbness that slowly passes diagonally across the palm of one hand in a wave. The absence of touch and pain sensation is complete. I can poke the affected area with a sharp object and feel absolutely nothing. I recently observed by chance that the ability to sense temperature is completely unaffected in the area that has gone numb. The temperature sensitivity remains so acute that I can sense the warmth of my breath with my numb fingertips. Has anyone else noticed this? If there is anyone else out there who gets numbness auras, please try checking your sensitivity to heat and cold.

  1. What an interesting observation, ! I've been trying to search to see if we have any other community members who have mentioned this - the numb area still sensing temperatures - but haven't had any success. Hopefully others who experience numbness/tingling can share if they too have noticed temperature sensitivity unaffected by the numbness. I'm curious, have you mentioned this to your doctor at all? Have they said anything or had an explanation for this? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. I get Numbness feeling across cheek opposite side of migraine. My nose gets icy cold feeling inside and actual temperature drop compared to cheeks and forehead. Light sensitive, nausea.

    2. thank you for sharing. I'm going to mention so they can see your comment here as well as they were the one who asked the original question about numbness and temperature and auras. We appreciate you sharing your experience. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. I will mention it to my doc at my next appointment in a couple of months.

    1. I mentioned this to my neurologist through the messaging system and he was not aware of the temperature effect that I described. I will ask for an explanation of why this might be. I suspect that the neurological pathways for touch/pain and temperature sensations are separate, and connected to different brain areas.
