Guilt on missing out, how do we deal with it?

I just missed out on a 40th wedding anniversay our kids planned for us, by the time we got there I was shaking so bad and feeling nauceous, room spinning, I spent the entire time laying down in the car. I felt so guilty. I am the queen of guilt, raised very Catholic, so I can feel guilty about anything. My parents instilled a great sense of guilt in me. (PS - I'm still Catholic, just a little more forgiving). I just feel so bad missing out on major milestones, and right now my daughter is cleaning the house for me. Some family members get it, some don't. Any advice for dealing with guilt?

  1. it's so disappointing when you miss major life events, especially special celebrations for you. I'm sorry to hear that you experienced this disappointment. I had a migraine on my honeymoon so I can relate. How are you feeling today. Have you gotten any relief?

    1. Thank you Alene, I'm doing ok, thanks for asking. Just the overwhelming guilt, but having this site really helps. I know I'm not alone, or crazy. I think one of the biggest kickers is that I was so healthy "before", so even though this has been going on for 10 years, it is still an adjustment as migraine hits me out of the blue. Even with Botox, even when I do everything right. But again, I know I'm not alone, and that's what I really need. I have no extended family on my side. You guys understand. You guys are amazing. Thank you.

      1. you put to words the thoughts and feelings that so many of us have. Thank you for that gift. It's challenging who unpredictable migraine attacks can be, and there definitely is a grieving process that we experience in adjusting to this "new life." As with any grief that can take a long time. We understand and we are in this with you! We're so glad that you're part of this community and conversation.

    2. We have so many great articles on this topic, Lisa. I don't want to overwhelm you with too many, so I'll just pass along this one from Holly which I think is insightful. (Alene has also written some good stuff on guilt, too!)
