Help finding a neurologist

I have chronic complex migraines. My neurologist retired and her replacement basically said everything has failed and she didn’t think she could help me. Didn’t ask about my symptoms or frequencies of migraines. Just brushed me off and I left in tears. I need someone who thinks out of the box. Not someone who jumps through standard hoops looking for billable items. I can travel anywhere. I’m just desperate for a compassionate neurologist who will help me. Any suggestions

  1. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Consider seeking out Dr. Carolyn Bernstein at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
She's known for her compassionate and innovative approach to treating migraines.

    1. Thank you. Every suggestion helps. I’ll look into her

      1. Some migraine specialists can offer virtual or telephone consultations if they're too far away. They may not be able to treat you, but a conversation with you and/or your current treating doctors could really make a difference. -Melissa, team member

    2. Hi there - I'm so sorry your doctor retired and you were left abandoned in one fell swoop. A similar thing happened to me. My doctor, at that time, told me he was retiring and said I was a lost cause - that he had no one to refer me to because he had already tried everything with me. How horrific. Illustrated such a lack of understanding that migraine is somehow curable. I think some doctors still hold that belief and they grow exhausted by those of us who can't be easily mended.

Ultimately, I found my own person who has been phenomenal- he is absolutely out of the box - and now he's on the verge of retiring, too! ugh.

I'm going to send you a couple of resources we have on migraine specialists around the country and encourage you to do your due diligence. We encourage you to look for people who are migraine specialists as they receive additional training atop GP and neurologist training. Also- look up reviews on these doctors and interview them on your first appointment to ensure a good fit: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/evaluating-doctor-patient-relationship-right-fit.

These lists are not comprehensive- so continue doing your own research and gathering of names and referrals as well. If you would like to focus on a specific state or region- and you're comfortable doing so, you might name that information here so that people can offer area-specific referrals.

We are here for you. Please keep in touch about your search. Warmly - Holly (team member)
