How to sign up for disability

I'm currently working 14 hours a week in a restaurant. I have chronic migraines and Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I am in between specialists for both at this time. Do I need to wait until I am established with both doctors?

  1. I'm sorry to hear that you're working such long, and physically demanding hours while managing migraine and RA. I'm not sure the direct answer to your question, but wanted to pass this along in hopes that it might help shed some light on the process for you. I'm sure others will join this conversation for you as well. https://migraine.com/resources-disability

In the meantime, do you have scheduled appointments with the two specialists on the calendar yet? If not, I would probably reach out just so you can get on the list as sometimes it can take awhile to get in as a new patient.

    1. Hi Alene,
I am scheduled with both doctors. Rheumatology is in December and Neurology is in January.
I will look at the resources. Thank you very much.

      1. I'm sorry to hear you're going through so much pain. I would definitely say yes, you should be established with thorough notes taken by the doctor or nurse practitioner. They will definitely be able to say you can still work to some capacity. Best wishes!

        1. thank you for lending support to a fellow migraine community member. I just love how we can come to together to lend an ear, show support and provide resources. I hope to hear you are doing well today. (Tonya, team member).

      2. , One of the best things you can do is to make sure your illnesses are well-documented. Solid documentation provides you with a strong foundation. Applying for disability, either at work or through Social Security, is a process that can take a while. You will need to prove that you are disabled and that your disability limitations impact your life and ability to find gainful employment. You can retain an attorney to help advocate for you as you work through the process. Many will want you to wait until you are initially denied disability before assisting you. I hope this helps you along that journey. Warmly, Cheryl Migraine Community Team
