Infusions

Has anyone been getting IV infusions as a preventative measure for their migraines? What has your experience been like? Have you noticed an improvement/decrease in the frequency of your migraines or a decrease in the severity of them?
I’m on monthly SubQ injections of CGRP meds & sometimes they seem to help, but others (like today) not at all. I’m also on Topamax at a rather high dose & I’d rather not be.
Thanks in advance.
Ruth

  1. I'm sorry to hear that you're in pain today from a migraine. It's frustrating when you feel like you're doing all the right things, trying all the recommendations from your doctor, and still not getting the outcome that you need and want.

I personally have not done any IV therapy, so I can't speak from firsthand experience. I'm sure that others will join this conversation with their experiences that will be helpful for you.

In the meantime, I wanted to share a couple articles with you in hopes that they might be helpful for you. I don't know that they're exactly what you're looking for but I figured that they might offer some information and perspectives on some of your treatments. As always, take what resonates, and leave what doesn't.

And please keep us posted on what you decide to do, if you feel comfortable doing so.

    1. Hi
Thank you for sharing your concerns and questions with us. Like , I've not tried infusions/injections of the new CGRP medications. We've heard from folks who have good results, and others not so much. Aimovig, Ajovy and Emgality are injections, while Vyepti is an infusion. Have you seen this information on them?

It's important to remember migraine prevention medications don't get rid of or "cure" migraine disease - they work to reduce attack frequency and severity. At this point there is no cure for migraine, hopefully we'll see one in our lifetime. The thing is like you, many of us are on a combination of medications, I sure am.

I hear you about high dose Topamax. At one point I was on 400 mg, which was ridiculous - still had migraine attacks. If you don't think you're seeing any benefit from it, please talk to your doctor about it and try not to lose hope. There are over 100 medications, supplements, devices, complementary therapies and lifestyle modifications that can be used to manage migraine disease and most of us are on a combination of these.
