Nurtec side effects

Hello everyone,

I recently started taking nurtec as a rescue med for my chronic migraines. I have been struggling with migraines for about ten years now. However, over all I love nurtec, seems to work well and quickly. Recently I started experiencing the urge to urinate frequently, and am wondering if it’s connected to nurtec at all. I have read a few studies where UTI symptoms were a side effect some participants experienced. Has anyone else experienced this side effect?

  1. Hi there - So happy to hear that you've found relief with Nurtec. It's always wonderful to hear how much of a difference these new medications can make for people. I'm personally not aware of anyone reporting frequent urination as a side effect of Nurtec, but that doesn't mean it's not happening. I encourage you to reach out to your prescriber for the most definitive answer. I can imagine that they will have a comprehensive knowledge on the potential side effects and which are most common among people they see. It could be possible that the frequent urination is part of your migraines, as discussed in this article here: https://migraine.com/blog/early-signs-symptoms-migraine-attack. But to be sure, I'd ask your prescriber.

    1. Actually I have had 3 uti’s over the past year and it lines up exactly with nurtec. It is interesting. My neurologist didn’t hear of it but it is also a relatively new drug.
Another thing I’m very excited to mention. I was diagnosed with long covid migraine. Started exactly 1 year ago and I’ve had migraine or one just under the surface every single day. Botox treatment twice now only effective for about 3 weeks out of 12.
Anyway my new discovery is weatherx earbuds. And free weatherx app. Monitors barometric pressure and sure enough. Migraine definitely coincided with pressure drops and earbuds so successful over the last week it’s hard to believe!!! Please please give them a try.

      1. Hi Diane- Thanks so much for sharing some of your journey with us. While our site doesn't seem to have a mention of the tie between UTI's and nurtec, I just googled to seek any connection. I found this study: https://pharmacy.hsc.wvu.edu/media/3327/nurtec-rimegepant.pdf which makes mention of this challenge- saying "
Nurtec is to be taken orally and has a novel oral disintegrating tablet which aids in absorption time and ease of administration. The adverse events have been limited with nausea being the most commonly reported, and some urinary tract infections have been seen during the clinical trials." I'd encourage you to google it and bring any research you can find that confirms it to your next doctor appointment.
In reality, many side effects can accompany migraine treatments. We are often left with the tough decision when we find an effective treatment with a challenging side effect. Can we bear the side effect due to the relief the medication provides? A hard decision, to be sure
And thank you for sharing about the weatherX earbuds. We have heard community members singing the praises of this product over the years. Here's one of the many mentions: https://migraine.com/forums/migraine-x-earplugs. Wonderful that you've found something to help! We have a fair amount of information about barometric pressure changes and how to address that migraine trigger: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/unavoidable-weather-trigger. Check out the community comments that follow that video- as there are some very helpful strategies offered.

Please stay in touch- we're so glad to learn more from and about you! Warmly - Holly - migraine.com team

      1. UTIs seem to be a potential side effects of this medication. You can read more in this study; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9560892/.
