Tips for a long lasting migraine and puffy eye?

I’ve had migraines on and off for a while now but this last one has been a killer. It’s lasted for 7 days now and at its worst point I was honestly convinced something was seriously wrong. After much fighting with my doctor he gave me triptans and another anti nausea drug and they seem to have helped take the edge off the headache but it’s still there and now I have a swollen eyelid too - is this normal, and does anyone know of any ways to resolve this?

  1. - Thank you so much for sharing some of your journey with us. So sorry to hear that you've been experiencing an intractable attack but glad the triptans seem to have taken the edge off. Hopefully, the discomfort will continue to subside- but if not there are other treatments available. Some practices can administer nerve blocks or an injection of Toradol (a very strong ibuprofen-type drug) - and some doctors prescribe a short course of steroids to calm the cycle of pain and inflammation.
As to the puffy eyelid, you are not alone in this. I'm going to give you some links to resources we have on this topic - which include community members discussing their experiences and strategies on this front. Hope they prove helpful: https://migraine.com/blog/puffy-eyes-and-the-changing-face. And: https://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/puffy-eyelid. Please let us know if this is helpful to you and perhaps others will chime in with ideas for managing this symptom.
So glad you're with us - thinking of you. Warmly- Holly -migraine.com team.

    1. Thank you so much for your reply! In the end it was an anti-histamine that finally seemed to reduce my eye. I thankfully got a referral to Neurology from the doctor in the end so fingers crossed I hear back soon. Thanks for your advice 😀

    2. Oh I'm so glad you chimed back in to let us know you are feeling some relief. I've been thinking of you. Interesting about the antihistamine. I'm guessing that information will be helpful for your doctor once you have that appointment (hope that is soon). Wonderful you got the referral. Keep us in touch with what you learn. Sending you love this morning. Warmly- Holly -migraine.com team.

  2. Hey there, how are you feeling? Did your attack pass, or were you able to get in touch with your doctor about different treatment? It sounds like migraine isn't a very regular part of your life, but things seem to be worsening. You may want to consider seeking out a specialist. Please feel free to share more about your migraine history if you want to or think it could be useful. Sending a hug, take care. -Melissa, migraine.com team

    1. It did, thankfully! Took 7 whole days which was the longest I've had for sure. I've had migrains on and off all my life, usually months of bouts at a time, but this latest one has been a killer for sure, and never as bad as this particular migraine! I got a referral to a specialist so just waiting on hearing from them which could take months 🙁
