Stuffed up head

Every night my head starts stuffing up. I take Benadryl as a rescue regimen and don’t like taking it frequently, as I’m afraid it won’t work when I need it. I’ve used a steroid mist, which works quickly. However, the directions say not to use more than 3 days or it can contribute to the problem. I’ve tried many other remedies that haven’t worked. Does anyone else have this problem and what have you tried that is successful? Thank you!

  1. Thanks so much for writing in with this question. Does this congestion result in a migraine? We have a fair amount of resources on how congestion relates to migraine which you might find of interest: https://migraine.com/search?s=congestion%20. Have you seen a doctor about this? Either a neurologist/migraine doctor (if that is the primary issue) or an ENT if the congestion is the main issue? I would think they would be able to assist you with what to take that would help you avoid a rebound issue. So sorry you are dealing with this! We are here for you. Warmly- Holly -migraine.com team.

    1. It doesn’t as much as it used to as I’m on Amovig. But it still makes for a miserable night.

  2. , I have that exact same problem starting around 10 pm. My hubby claims rinsing his sinuses twice a day prevents this, but it doesn't help me at all. I take the medication suggested by my ENT doc to help this, but to be honest, it doesn't make a difference at all. However, one very strange thing I've started doing that does work, but I can't imagine it's good for me, is petroleum jelly. I take a tiny amount and rub it on my finger until there's hardly any there, then completely coat my nose on the inside. Gross, huh? But that has been the only thing that has helped! I have always had problems with my sinuses bleeding too, but since I started this nasty ritual the bleeding has stopped. I wonder if I just have thin membranes or something. Now I know everyone is going to reply with better suggestions, but I have to say, I have a drawer full of natural solutions that haven't worked. But go ahead and suggest whatever. I'm cool. 🤗

    1. Thank you! I will get some petroleum jelly and give it a try!

    2. Annie -- have you seen the Ayr brand saline mist in the grocery store or drugstore? They also make a saline gel. I'd be curious to see if that works just as well as the petroleum jelly for you. I also have stubborn, bloody sinuses. I can get by using the mist on the regular, but since you are already using a jelly I thought I'd pass the word along. Good luck, friend! -Melissa, migraine.com team
