Swelling

Has anyone had head swelling/ head changing shape from migraines?

  1. Hi - Thank you for posting this question. Are you experiencing this symptom? If so, is it something you've experienced before? Do you have a history of migraine? I ask because swelling of the head can be a serious issue that may require prompt evaluation by a healthcare professional. It's not something we frequently hear about related to migraine. It can be related to a post-traumatic headache related to an injury: https://migraine.com/headache-types/post-traumatic-headaches. Or Encephalitis- but in that case the swelling is generally internal: https://migraine.com/headache-types/meningitis-encephalitis-headaches. Is this something you've experienced before?
If this is a new symptom, we'd strongly encourage you to pursue an evaluation by a healthcare professional as soon as possible. It's always best to be on the safe side in moments like these.
Please let us know what you find as you seek help. We are thinking of you. Warmly - Holly (team member)

    1. Thank you I seen a neurologist had a mri scan and he said the swelling was from my muscles at side of my head and it was a migraine, just abit confused how that can happen.

      1. That is interesting. Do you have a history of migraine? Swelling can happen when we have an intractable (days-long) migraine attack. But again- it's not generally visible. Hemiplegic migraine is a type of migraine that can produce visible symptoms (like drooping eyelids or overall one-sided face drooping) and other visible symptoms: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/hemiplegic-symptoms. Outside of that, migraine is generally known as an invisible disease- something that is experienced strongly within but is not seen by others. All of that said, migraine presents differently from person to person. So, if your doctor said this was a migraine symptom for you, it sounds plausible. I'm glad you did pursue medical care. How are you feeling now? Warmly - Holly (team member)
