Has anyone had unexpected success while taking phentermine?

I’m 45 and I’ve been coping with migraine pain since I was 13 years old. After various concerns about cognitive damage, and no improvement, my PCP has put me on Phentermine to help me with my extreme hypotension. For the 1st time I’m 30 years, I’ve been migraine free for over a month. I can’t find answers on why it’s working, and I’m in search of others who have had similar experiences.

  1. Hi myukna14,

Thank you for sharing that with us. Good for you! That's terrific you are seeing a reduction in migraine attack frequency and severity - I bet that feels terrific!!

I'm not familiar with using this medication pertaining to migraine prevention, but hopefully others will be along shortly to share their experiences with you.

    Keep us posted,
    Nancy

    1. Back when Phen-fen was all the rage as a Rx diet, (about 1997?) I was on the drug combo for three months.... before ithe combo was taken off the market due to heart problems. Phentermine was one half of that combo. I had very few migraines during that three months. I was also getting B shots during that time. However, after three months it lost its effectiveness- on both my migraines and weight loss. It was a terrible 4-6 weeks of detoxing as well.
I tried just the phentermine about a year later with no effectiveness either, and had another terrible time of detoxing. My neurologist at that time tried to figure out for me how the drug could have helped so he could find something similar that he thought might have less severe issues, but he couldn’t figure out what or why it seemed to help.
This was just my experience. I would caution you to be under a Doctors care for anything you try.

      1. Another “amphetamine” class of medication such as adderall might be something to ask your doctor about??

    2. Thank you both for your thoughtful responses. Amerg is typically my abortive when I wake up with a 10 out of 10 Migraine. I've used Migrainal, Midrin, Topamax, Imatrex, and Reglin. All of them more or less stopped working after the 1st dose. I have a few genetic abnormalities that keeps my body from processing medication easily, and I have horribly hypotensive. Yesterday my BP was 89/50, while taking phentermine. My PCP said as long as my BP doesn't get high he's ok with me on it for a longer period, where my Neuro is 100% for me not being on it. I'm not going to lie, I am terrified of how hard they'll come back. I am going to do a slow detox.
