Migraine and vomiting

This has only happened twice in my life, both of which the last year. Ive gotten severe migraines for years and have always taken medicine, slept, used a cold cloth, all of the normal remedies. This time none of those worked, I was nauseous and ended up vomiting (badly) and then soon after my migraine was gone. The medicine did nothing as it usually does. Has anyone had this happen?

  1. Oh so very sorry this happened to you. As someone who experiences nearly daily nausea and vomiting from intense migraine, I know how horrible that combination can be. A few things I would ask: first, since this is a relatively new experience - we'd recommend you talking to your doctor about it. Whenever we experience a new symptom- or our course of treatment stops working, it's a good idea to share the information with our doctor. They may want to do a new evaluation for you and/or it may be time to prescribe some anti-nausea medications for you. As to whether or not it's normal for the migraine to cease post-vomiting, yes- this is something we've heard of before: https://migraine.com/search?s=felt%20better%20after%20vomiting. Not sure why that's the case- but a number of people have mentioned it. This certainly doesn't occur across the board, but it has been mentioned. Please let us know if you have any other questions we can help you answer. We are here for you. Warmly, Holly (migraine.com team).

    1. Mine used to be better after throwing up, but that's not consistent at all.

      1. Thanks for sharing. We've heard this from other community members as well. You're not alone!
