Amitriptyline and hair loss

I googled amitriptyline and hair loss and it brought me here.

I have been on amitriptyline for many years at least 20 years. I have noticed hair loss in the last 2 or 3 years. After reading responses here I’m wondering if this drug could be causing my hair loss. My question is if the med is stopped does the hair grow back? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

  1. In my experience, it does not grow back. I lost some taking Amitriptyline, but even more when I was taking Depakote. I wish I had better news for you. Maybe someone else has had a different experience.

    1. I have lost a lot hair in taking Amitriptyline but have recently stopped taking it and is wearing a wig.
What can I do to grow my hair back or can I grow my hair back??

    2. Hi Bettie, I am truly so sorry to hear this. Have you spoken to your doctor about anything that may help to grow your hair back? You can also report this adverse side effects to the FDA. You can read more about it here.
Wishing you all the best and thank you for being here. -Joanna (Migraine.com Team)

  2. I was on it and did not lose hair. But I almost died a year ago in the hospital and that resulted in me almost losing all my hair. Ultimately I cut 12" off my hair and switched to a salon style shampoo/ conditioner & only wash my hair twice a week. Plus I take biotin vitamins. My hair is most definitely recovering and becoming thick again, much to my relief.
This is something you can bring up to your doctor. It is a valid concern, there is no reason to not feel like it is.

    1. Thanks for the info, but my hair is short as it is and I also take Biotin and in the past I have tried other hair products that claim to grow hair back or at least stop more loss. To no avail. I am seeing my doctor soon.

  3. I started losing chunks of my hair a few years ago, but it was attributed to another medication. It took forever to figure out that it was topamax, which I had been on for years.
My hair grew back, but it is definitely not as lush as it used to be. Zinc and selenium are good supplements to promote hair growth or even taking a pregnancy multi-vitamin. My doc even had me used men's strength Rogaine for a while.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. I didn't think I would be vain about losing my hair, but I was very self-conscious and almost at the point of buying wig.

    It can get better!
