Diagnosis of Migraine & Headache Types

Do I really have vestibular migrain?

  • By Ahlex

I’ve had problems with dizziness for several years. At last I went to a neurologist and he suggested it may be V.M. and prescribed me propranolol. But I’m not sure about his diagnosis. I don’t have any problems with my balance. My dizziness is more spaciness accompanied by difficulty thinking/concentrating, feeling pressure on my face and a feeling that I may fall asleep at any time. My headaches are also very mild.

My blood pressure is not high and propranolol can have withdrawal effects so I’m not sure about that either. If the goal is just to decrease blood pressure and improve blood flow, there are a ton of supplements that can do that such as citrulline, niacin, EGCG and many more.

    Hi Ahlex,

Thank you for sharing your story with us. Good to hear you’ve seen your doctor regarding this, but I wonder if another conversation about what the goal of taking propranolol is, other than reduced migraine attacks. Propranolol, brand name Inderal, a beta blocker, is used for migraine prevention, in fact it was one of the first medications FDA approved for it. You can read more about this medication here; https://migraine.com/?s=Inderal&submit=Go.

Vestibular migraine can have a wide range of symptoms including balance issues. However, NOT having balance issues doesn’t necessarily rule it out. This link has loads of information on this type of migraine disease; https://migraine.com/?s=vestibular+migraine&submit=Go.

There are many different supplements that can be taken for migraine attack prevention, but it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking anything over-the-counter. Many think dietary supplements are natural and safe, but that’s not the case. Supplements can interact with medications, and/or other diseases. When you get a moment you may want to look at our section on supplements here; https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/natural-remedies/.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer on whether or not you have this type of migraine, but only a qualified doctor can do that. If you’re not happy with him, there is no harm in getting a second opinion.

    Hope this helps,
    Nancy
