Prodome length vs severity

  • By Tamara

Anyone notice a trend with their prodrome symptoms and severity or length of migraine symptoms? I’ve had a rough go the last few months (chronic headaches every day and many weeks with (I think) back to back migraines …. or 6 day long ones). I started getting prodrome symptoms yesterday for a migraine but still haven’t gone any headache ….also 1:30am and can’t sleep which is extremely unusual for me … sigh.

I know one is coming though because I am very weather triggered and we are going from -30 the past few days (no you don’t want to know what th temperature was like with wind chill ….) to +5 by Thursday. It will kill me that I know.

But I have started a different brand of cannabis oil so wondering if it’s helping or I’m just getting symptoms for a one hell of a migraine.

    Interested to know your views.

    Hi Tamara,

Thank you for reaching out and being part of our community. I know how frustrating migraine can be.

Changes in the barometric pressure can be a strong migraine trigger for some of us. I know many of us are having a difficult time this winter. We have information on this topic in these articles; https://migraine.com/living-migraine/triggered-by-weather-this-medication-may-help/ and https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-triggers-the-power-of-weather/.

There are four phases of a migraine attack; prodrome, aura, headache, and postdrome and it’s possible to have a migraine attack without the headache phase. These are called silent or acephalic migraine and you can read more about those here; https://migraine.com/migraine-types/silent-migraine/.

Anytime we have new and/or different symptoms its important to let the doctor know so he can make sure everything checks out.

Keep us posted on how the new cannibis works out.

Update …. yup it’s one hell of a migraine. Started officially Tuesday night/very early Wednesday morning and is still keeping me off work, house cleaning and most activities. Tried numerous attempts of trigger point injections which normally help to bring the pain down and 3 days of meds around the clock and nothing is helping.

Started muscle relaxant balcofen today on top of everything else.

What do you do when the migraine is on day 6, severe 8/10 pain but not severe enough to go to the ER/hospital inpatient care But too severe to do anything but sleep and watch a bit of TV? I hate this so much.

    HI Tamara,

I’m so sorry you are having a difficult time. Extended migraine pain is exhausting and frustrating. The thing is we don’t like to see migraine pain last longer than 72 hours as this increases our risk of status migrainous and stroke. When you get a moment take a look at this information; https://migraine.com/blog/what-is-emergency/.

When I have extended migraine pain, I contact my doctor and get an infusion; https://migraine.com/blog/alternatives-to-the-er/.
I’ve also taken a steroid dose pack to help break a nasty cycle. I would encourage you to contact your doctor and see how he can help you.

    Please keep me posted,
    Nancy
