I am mentally drained from my attacks. Help?

Hey there...

Hope everyone is well during such hard times. I’m new here and it’s unusual of me to seek help online but I am tired and desperate.

My migraines started when I was young and just went from bad to worse over time. I’m 28 years old and it’s been 15 years since having the first attack. I remember that day vividly. Every day I just worry about the next attack. I am getting depressed and I’m almost constantly dealing with the throbbing and pounding pain. On some days, my preventive meds work every now and then.

I cant even lie down because my migraine gets 20x worse. I honestly don’t know what to do. I went to see many doctors but nothing seemed to work for me. I know every one is different but what have you done that worked for you?

Thanks guys.

  1. Hi Que, thank you for reaching out! Welcome to the community! I hear how much you are struggling with your migraine symptoms. 1. Thank you so much for the warm welcome and support. I’ll be sure to check the articles out.

  2. Hi Que-
What worked for me was see a migraine specialist who treats all kinds of headaches. He has tried medications that help prevent an attack from coming on and abortive meds to treat the migraine when it comes. I also keep a daily migraine diary of my symptoms and treatments. That helps a lot to see each month how my migraines are and keep track of what meds I’ve tried.
Migraine diaries can be on paper or phone app. Whatever is easier for you.
It sounds like you have done everything in your power to stay migraine free.
    I hope this helps.

      1. Yes, absolutely. I was only diagnosed within the past 6 months and am on my second type of migraine preventatives and second type of migraine pain meds. Feeling very hopeless.

        1. I hear how frustrated you are in trying to find the proper treatment for migraine disease. Please try not to feel hopeless as there are over 100 medications, supplements, devices, complementary therapies and lifestyle modifications that can be used to treat migraine disease. Most of us are on a combination of these, I sure am!
Something else I wanted to mention is that when we start new medications, it can take 90 days (at the therapeutic dose) before we notice improvement, which is frustrating in itself. Also of note during this time is that potential side effects may lessen the longer we take the new medication. The thing is if we don't give each medication a fair trial, we'll never know if it would have been the one to work!
When living with migraine disease it's important our toolbox have a migraine preventive medication, and acute medications to stop an attack. Would you be willing to share which medications you've tried?
It can be discouraging trying to find the right treatment, and unfortunately seems to be a process of elimination. Hang in there - we're here for you! Will you let me know what you think?
Low pain wishes heading your way, Nancy Harris Bonk, team member

        2. Thank you Nancy. Your experience and advice does give me hope. I did not realize it can take up to 90 days for a new med to kick in. I am on Emgality as a preventative and Rizotryphan as an abortive. ( I may not have the spelling correct.) It has not been 90 days so I guess i have to do what I hate to do - wait. Knowing there is a chance this might work is enough to keep me believing. Thank you.
