What Migraine Medications Have People Tried?

So I am 19 years old and have been suffering from 20 migraines per month and almost every day is a headache day. I have tried Amitriptyline, Topiramate, Propranolol, Mirtazapine, Sumatriptan and Naratriptan. None of these have provided me any relief. I am currently in a six-month waiting list to see a Neurologist, however, its an awfully long wait without anything to help me. Normal over the counter medications (like paracetamol and aspirin) don't provide much relief either. Is it even worth getting back in contact with my doctor? & Are there any other medication options that I could try? Thanks 😀

  1. hannahmm21, I hear how much you endure living with chronic migraine. It is awful being without a treatment to offer you relief and waiting on a neurology appointment. Six months is a long time to wait! While we cannot give medical advice over the internet (for your safety!), this resource provides information and links to the various current treatments for migraine that I thought you might be interested in perusing:

Hopefully, it can give you some ideas and help you decide if contacting your doctor while you wait for the neurologist makes sense for you. Please keep us posted on how you are managing. We are here to listen anytime you need support. Wishing you a gentle day. ~Allyson (Migraine.com team)

    1. I'm so sorry you have to wait 6 months, that's a lot of migraines to have to deal with. Everyone responds differently but here are a few things I have tried that offer little and big relief for me: yoga, heating pad, ice pack, massage (not a gentle massage, but a deep get into your muscles massage. After trying many places I found a lady who does acupressure and it was awesome), and acupuncture.
I am currently taking Boswellia, its an herb I got at my local health food store. It has reduced my migraine frequency and intensity by half.
Also, 4 days ago I got the daith piercing, so far its been good, but I need a month to go by before I know if it worked.
Take care and I hope you find some relief somehow!

      1. Hi, Hannah. Is there only one neuro in your area? I'm wondering if it may help to call around and see if there is another opening elsewhere, or perhaps an option for at-home telemedicine. I'd hate to see you have to wait that long. We are here for you! -Melissa, migraine.com team
