Sumatriptan and Hemiplegic Migraines

So, I got prescribed a sumatriptan injectable to use when the nurtec alone doesn't work. I tried it for the first time today, and it has made migraine worse, not better.

Some googling seems to suggest that sumatriptan is not effective for hemiplegic migraines, which this one is definitely a hemiplegic ones. Can anyone else confirm? Or has anyone else had issues with sumatriptan?

  1. Hi , I just wanted to check in. How are you doing currently? I see it's been about a week since your post. Were you able to reach out to your doctor about the medication seeming to make your migraine attack worse? While I can't confirm this from person experience, and am not a doctor, I think I am seeing some of the same results on information you mention. That being said, some of the information looks to be several years old, and I'm seeing some contradicting information about whether triptans are recommended for hemiplegic migraine. Please, if you haven't already, please reach out to your doctor. I do hope that you are doing okay. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. So, I did get in to my neurologist. They gave me a nerve block a day early. It helped a lot, but the headache has stuck around, seems to have turned into a mix migraine/tension/sinus headache. Really glad I'm off work the rest of the week and can just rest.

    1. I'm so glad you were able to get in to your doctor early, but what a bummer that you still have a lingering headache (despite the fact that the nerve block helped). I hope you were able to get a lot of resting done last week. How has this week been going? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
