Blood Pressure; Low as a possible prodrome or trigger?

I have seen mention of high blood pressure being associated with severe headaches. I am wondering if *low* blood pressure (110/60 or less) might preceed or accompany the onset of migraines for some people. If people are willing to collect personal data to see if there might be a correlation, it might be worthwhile to aggregate it. I am going to try this myself, although I recently have not been having as many migraine episodes as I used to. The way I will do this is to take a couple of BP readings at about the time I find it necessary to take an oral abortive like Imitrex, and compare that to baseline values after the migraine has been aborted by the meds and at other times when I have been free of migraines for at least 12 hours. For ease of recording, use a monitor that displays time and preferably also date, snap a photo with a phone camera, and record the data later.
Has anyone seen any published studies relating BP and migraines?

  1. Hi , thanks for reaching out. I hope some of our community members, especially those with low blood pressure, can share any knowledge or experience they have on this. While I don't personally have an experience or information, I was doing a very rough google search and there does seem to be some mention of low blood pressure possibly being linked to migraine, although in what way, I'm not sure. Here is a link to the information I found, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20158621/.

If you're comfortable, please let us know if you end up keeping track of this and what you discover about your personal experience with this.

Wishing you a gentle day. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. That's interesting, TY, and it's the sort of thing that I was wondering about:
"In this normotensive migrainous population, we observed that diastolic hypotension before or very early, during, and after migraine attack was the most significant result (5.1%). Although it was not statistically significant, the total number of hypotensive values was remarkable. "

    1. I have nothing significant to add, just that it looks like there are lots of people in the community mentioning they have a history of either low blood pressure and/or POTS. -Melissa, team member
