Brain tumour?

I'm a 56-year-old male, otherwise fit and healthy, but I've been experiencing recurring episodes of visual disturbances that my GP believes are migraine aura (ocular migraines). Ive had 6 in the last 3 months and maybe a couple last year. I'm becoming increasingly anxious that something more serious, particularly a brain tumour, could be responsible. I work on PC screen all day and watch tv all night sometimes working again on PC. I normally have a coffee in the mornings and decaf the rest of the day.

My medical timeline:

January 2026 – Eye examination

I had an eye examination earlier this year after an ocular / Aura migraine, before my GP appointment. I haven't had another eye examination since. eyes were very healthy.

September 2026 – GP appointment: I consulted my GP about the visual disturbances. The GP looked into eyes with bright light, very quickly suggested they were ocular migraines.

16 October 2026 – Visual migraine episode: I experienced shimmering visual disturbances lasting approximately 20–30 minutes. I'd had extra-strong black coffee beforehand, which made me wonder whether caffeine might be a trigger.

27 October 2026 – Another episode: I experienced another episode while working close to a very bright computer screen. I'd had my usual coffee in the morning and decaffeinated coffee later in the day.

The visual disturbance was mainly noticeable towards the right side of my peripheral vision and consisted of shimmering zigzag patterns. It lasted approximately 15–30 minutes before resolving.

What the episodes are like: Bright, shimmering, zigzag visual patterns. Usually most noticeable towards the right side of my peripheral vision. Difficult to determine whether one eye or both eyes are affected but probabaly both as zigzag remained when eyes closed. Typically last around 15–30 minutes. Vision returns to normal afterwards. Generally no accompanying headache. No weakness, numbness, speech difficulties or seizures. I feel completely normal between episodes.

I've noticed that bright computer screens might be involved in some episodes. I've also wondered about caffeine and dehydration, as most of my fluid intake comes from tea and coffee.

My biggest concern is developing these recurring visual symptoms in my mid-50s. Although my GP believes they're migraines, I keep wondering whether a brain tumour or another neurological condition could cause similar symptoms. I'm particularly concerned about whether the episodes should be investigated further with an MRI, given my age.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Has anyone developed migraine aura for the first time in their 50s or later, particularly without headaches?

Did your symptoms involve shimmering zigzags lasting 15–30 minutes, possibly triggered by bright screens? Did you undergo an MRI or neurological assessment, and what was the outcome?

I'd really appreciate hearing about similar experiences, as the uncertainty is making me quite anxious.

Ive now had about 7 this year 🙁 and its making me depressed and anxious
