Commenced with puberty and has never left.

In 1971 I was twelve years old, seated in class in grammar school. Out of the blue I felt a sharp, stabbing pain on the left side of my head, centered behind the eye. It was so severe it made me nauseous. I got up to go ask the teacher for a bathroom pass, but before I could leave the room I was sick in front of the entire class. I was humiliated, and the teacher sent me home. This was over 50 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. For years, I was prescribed only prescription Advil (during the days before it was OTC), which did absolutely nothing for me. Several times a month I would lay in a darkened room for hours, moaning and often crying from the pain and nausea. This continued for years until the 1990s, when the miracle of triptan drugs became available in the United States. I still suffer from migraines, but most often they can be averted if I take Nurtec and/or Sumatriptan in time.

  1. Oh my heart goes out to you, , and that 12 year old child you were! I can only imagine the feelings you had as a child, experiencing such intense pain, and then being sick in front of the class. (One of a kid's most feared experiences, being sick in front of the entire class.) I'm so glad to hear that you've been able to manage with Nurtec and/or Sumatriptan! But my goodness, what a challenging childhood and young adulthood to be trying to manage migraine with Advil. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us here. Sending you gentle hugs! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Thank you Christine! It’s truly a different world now that there are medicines that work to ward off an incoming migraine. It has made life infinitely more enjoyable for me and my family.
