New and Worried About Aura, Please Help

Hi everyone. 56 year old healthy male, I’m looking for some advice/reassurance from people who experience visual migraine/migraine aura, particularly about a sudden increase in frequency.

I've had visual migraine/aura occasionally for the last couple of years — probably around 4 episodes in total. They involve strange shimmering/distorted vision where i couldnt properly see parts of the screen and seem to affect both eyes, last around 15 minutes, and then my vision returns completely to normal. yesterday i have a mild headache after and felt tired.

I had my eyes checked after he first one last year and they are fine healthy.

My main concern is that I've now had 2 episodes in 2 days. Until now they've been very occasional and spread out over a long period, so having them on consecutive days has worried me.

Has anyone else had a similar pattern where you can go months without an aura and then suddenly have 2 or more close together?

I have health anxiety always thinking the worst and thinking brain tumour. yesterday i used an inversion upside down table for my back 3 times for 30 seconds which created a lot of pressure in my head being upside down and there was also a pending storm in the air. I dont know what to do or if I should rush to the GP

Any advice on reducing the likelihood of another one would also be really appreciated.

  1. Just rang Bupa they told me to call 111 and 111 said i need A&E doctor today

    1. , that is frustrating. Have you been able to get help? - Warmly, Donna (Team Member)

  2. I don’t usually get auras. When I do get an aura, it’s usually euphoria right before a migraine hits. My dad gets the visual migraines. Almost exactly how you described it. It’s not very often but every once in a while, he will get the consecutive days in a row. I do understand your concern, If you have a headache specialist, you should make an appointment to see them and talk about your concerns. It might be nothing but it’s better safe than sorry. I hope this helps.

  3. I’m so glad you spoke with a medical professional, . Hopefully going to A&E was just a precaution and they were able to rule out any major concerns. Visual auras are not uncommon, even an increase depending on triggers, however it’s always good to check with your doctor so I’m glad you’re getting yourself looked at and taken care of. If you’re comfortable, please keep us posted with how you’re doing and what you find out. Please know this community is here for you. Sending you gentle hugs! — Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  4. Hi doctor confirmed i have migrane with aura so good to get the disgnosis 😀

    1. , it is definitely good to have answers. Were you and your doctor able to come up with a treatment plan? - Warmly, Donna (Team Member)

    2. Hi , thank you so much for letting us know! While I'm sorry that you are dealing with migraine attacks, I am relieved to hear it wasn't something even more serious and that you're feeling good that you got a diagnosis.

Finding and managing triggers can sometimes be a bit of trial and error, but as you mentioned figuring out some potential dietary triggers I thought you might be interested in this article from one of our health leaders about this, https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-triggers-food-triggers-elimination-diets. We also have this editorial about environmental triggers that might be helpful as well, https://migraine.com/migraine-triggers/environment. I am curious about the potential triggers you mentioned (the back inversion machine, heat, and thunderstorm) maybe being the cause of your two in two days . Will you be going on this machine again for your back pain?

Again, I'm so glad to hear that you have some answers! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
