Waking Up with a Headache

Lately I've been waking up with a headache that is mostly med-resistant. I try to continue my regular routine but it's getting harder and harder to do that. I'm constantly thinking about what could be causing the overnight start but nothing comes to mind. I don't drink alcohol, the only meds I take are for migraine (Ajovy monthly), and I am very active (hiking, yoga, potting, grandkids, etc.). Any thoughts? Share your experiences.

  1. Oh how frustrating to be dealing with such challenging headaches in the morning, . I can hear how difficult it is getting for you. I hope some of our community members can share their thoughts and experiences with you here, but in the meantime I wanted to share this article with you, https://migraine.com/expert/three-causes-early-morning-headache. It has information on potential causes for early morning headaches. You might also be interested in the comments to the article (at the bottom of the page). Have you also brought these occurrences up with your doctor? And have you been able to manage them as the day goes on? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. I get morning migraines as well but found them to be a low blood sugar. It is hard to get 8 hours of sleep without waking up with a migraine almost every morning because I need to eat something.

    2. So sorry to hear that you're waking up with a migraine each day due to low blood sugar. That's not a great way to start things off! Does your doctor have any recommendations on what you might be able to do to help improve this? I can't imagine you are the only person who has come across this issue! - Cody (Team Member)

  2. Thanks, Christine. Unfortunately, (or probably fortunately 😀, none of the causes listed in that article apply to me. I'll be seeing my doctor in a month. I'm definitely going to share with her and get her thoughts.

    1. It's also worth remembering that migraine can change throughout our lives, and there's often not much of a reason for it. But this may be a signal to review what you're taking and consider a change with your doctor. Sorry you're going through this! Keep us posted. -Melissa, team member

  3. Recently I experienced similar issue (waking up multiple days with a migraine headache). I finally figured out it was due to the barometric pressure dropping. This time of year it happens a lot - and this past week it was dropping during the morning. I wish I could offer a non-med solution (I treat my migraines with a triptan med, and try to not take the meds too many days in a row out of fear of them losing efficacy, as happened with a prior version of a triptan).

    1. I take a triptan as well and have the same fear.
