Braces and TMJ

Hi All,
I’ve been suffering with daily chronic migraines now for 15 years. I had to retire at 55 as I couldn’t do my job effectively any longer. Yesterday was my 69 birthday and my present was a trip to the dentist’s office lol. I saw a very experienced Orthodontist and after X-rays and examinations he thinks he can cure my migraines because I have TMJ. By putting on braces to realign my teeth and jaw it should take the pressure off of the nerves behind my jaw bones. At this point in life I’ve tried everything else so why not. If it doesn’t work at least I’ll have perfect looking teeth. Has anyone else tried this before? I’d love to hear from you.

  1. Hi , you're definitely not alone in experiencing TMJ. We've had several community members write about experiencing both migraine and TMJ. I'm linking an article (with comments from the community) that you might be interested in, https://migraine.com/living-migraine/link-between-tmj. Another community member wrote about a TMJ "splint" that helped them (of course I should point out that just because it helped one person doesn't necessarily mean it will be answer for another person), https://migraine.com/stories/when-your-jaws-trigger-migraines.

It certainly would be great if this was the answer for your relief! Hopefully some of our community members here can share with you personally, and, if you're willing, please keep us posted. I'm crossing my fingers you get some relief! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. It seems like you have a good perspective about this -- knowing that at the very least you'll get an extra-nice smile for your efforts, and hoping for the best. Have you considered a second opinion, just to make sure the orthodontist's plan is reasonable? I imagine he has your best interests at heart, but talking to someone else might give you some additional thoughts or peace of mind. I'll be excited to hear what you decide to do, we support whatever you choose! -Melissa, team member

      1. I did get a second opinion from my family doctor and he agreed I should go for it. In the meantime the orthodontist called yesterday and after further review of my X-rays and history he has changed his opinion on the braces. He said that with the amount that my teeth need to move my gums would not be able to grow back and fill in the spaces created. He is making an appointment for me to see a periodontist to explore more.
In the meantime the other option is a “bite plate”. They did a fitting yesterday and I should have it in another few days. The orthodontist said that this should be just as effective as the braces in real aligning my jaw for the TMJ. We’re going to start with one on my lower teeth and then see how that works and then do one for my upper teeth. Hopefully this works. I’ll keep you updated.

        1. I have heard good things about bite plates. It sure sounds a lot better than the aggravation and time commitment of braces! Ha. I wish you and your doctors the best of luck. It'll be awesome if you have some success. 😀 -Melissa, team member
