my first migraine

When I was about 10, I had a migraine and vomiting in the evening. My mom had been skating and fell and hurt herself. I had to get myself to the sink (we had no indoor toilet back then) and remember vomiting many times. I do not remember any head pain, but always think of it as my first migraine.

I didn't have another until I was 20. I took an overnight coach from my parent's home back to where my husband and I were living that summer, and had to vomit many times in the bathroom on the coach. Afraid I would lose my glasses down the toilet, the movement of the coach, very bad head pain, and bright sunshine coming in the coach windows made it a memorable experience. Of course I had no painkillers on me back then. I spent the day travelling with my husband as he delivered books to schools in the district, with severe pain and light sensitivity. Not a fun experience !

  1. What memorable first migraine, -- both at 10 and at 20! I can only imagine the challenges as a ten-year-old trying to navigate that without your mother's help. And it sounds especially miserable to be suffering on a long bus ride with the light, movement of the coach, and endless vomiting. Did your migraine continue fairly regularly after that one as a 20-year-old? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. thankfully, no, I didn't have another migraine for years, but then at age 26 they began to be regular - I later thought it might have been from new glasses which prescription was reportedly too strong. I'll never know. They've been up and down, sometimes strong and frequent; but none during my three pregnancies, which was a real blessing!!

    2. , oh I'm so thankful to hear that you had the blessing of no migraines during your three pregnancies. While many people do experience some relief of migraine during pregnancy, I also know that pregnancy can go either way for migraine sufferers and some people do experience worsening of symptoms. (For anyone reading your comment I wanted to share this article about migraine and pregnancy, https://migraine.com/living-with-migraine/treatment-during-pregnancy.) How great you were able to get through your pregnancies with relief! The ups and downs you mention are, unfortunately, quite common. How are you managing currently? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
