Chronic Migraines and Chronic Headaches

There are many times trying to ascertain whether it is a Severe Migraine or a Severe Headache when one awakes in the middle of the night is not an easy decision. Should I take a Naratriptan 2.5mg tablet, should I take a Sumatriptan Injection (Stat-Dose) or should I take a Ibuprofen PM tablet or a Diazepam 5 mg tablet; or a combination. Can you get a Chronic Migraine and Chronic Headache at the same time? I do get both at times where the left side of my Head gets sharp pains leading to a Migraine and the right side of my head has a different pain than a Migraine. No matter which I choose to address; some of the time it is a no win situation. Right now, I have a Migraine on my left side of my head and a headache on the right side as I am typing. I will try and address the migraine and hopefully that will relieve my Headache on the right side of my head. I will also take an ice pack, no matter what I choose; just to get some relief. An Injection right now and an ice pack and to bed.

  1. Ugh, so sorry to hear you were dealing with a migraine and headache, . Have things managed to calm down a bit between when you first posted this and now? It certainly is understandable that it can be hard to know which treatment to try if you're not entirely sure what is causing the symptoms! I do hope that you were able to get some rest and relief. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Yesterday, it started to ease; but it took to today, August 28th, after taking my Migraine tablet and one Ibuprofen PM to finally get total relief . I try not to take more than 2 Ibuprofen PM per month; but sometimes I have to try to get the relief that I so drastically need. Many, many times I have NO idea of what caused or started the Migraine and Headache. But when they both start and continue for some time it becomes a guessing game.

      1. It sounds really frustrating to wake up in the middle of the night and have to decide which medication might help when it’s hard to tell if it’s a migraine, a regular headache, or both at the same time. It’s good to hear that you were able to find relief eventually, even if it took a combination of treatments. Keeping track of triggers or patterns, even small details like time of day, sleep, or foods, might help make some of those decisions a bit easier over time.

        1. I watch everything all the time. Watermelon is now off the foods list. Flowers, perfume, and cologne are some of my triggers; including tomatoes. I gave up meat and I keep Kosher so everything is considered. 55 years and counting!
