Gastric stasis

Has anyone else noticed that when you have a migraine that your stomach does not work properly. My food just sits in my stomach. This is sometimes accompanied by nausea but not always. I just recently researched this and it is in fact fairly common. When I have this gastric stasis, taking a tablet orally is therefore not very effective.

  1. I can see how taking an oral tablet would not be very effective if there is some delay in gastric emptying, . I know you mention doing some research, but have you also had a chance to talk with your doctor about this? I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done to help when this happens? Perhaps a different type of medication that can bypass the gastric system? Also, for anyone else who is interested in more information, I am linking to a study with migraine and gastric stasis, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5098810/. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Thanks Christine.
My migraines are no longer as intense as they were when I was younger so I am okay to work through an episode with gel packs. I am often able take tablets early before my system stops working, but if I need to take additional tablets for the pain, I'm out of luck. For very bad migraines I do have a prescription rizatriptan that can be taken sublingually (dissolve under the tongue).
I just thought I'd share it because there is so little talk about this symptom, yet from my reading, it is quite common.
      Have a wonderful day!

      1. Hey Trudy,

In addition to the study Christine sent you, we have a couple articles in the archives that might be useful.

One of our members, , has written extensively about her life with gastroparesis and migraine -- I tagged her here, so maybe she will see it and share some insight with you. In any case, you are not alone. Hope some of these resources are helpful! -Melissa, team member

        1. Hi there I understand all about that as I have Gastroparesis and migraines. It can be hard to take oral meds, especially pills.
Something that my doctor did was 1st, prescribed oral disintegrating medication like Odt Zofran and Odt Zomig. They did help me, more than the tablets. Currently, I use iv zofran, iv pepcid, and iv benadryl. IV meds are because my gastroparesis and malabsorption are severe. As such, I'm on IV nutrition, TPN.
I hope you're able to come up with a viable solution, with your care team.

          All the best,
          Tonya
