Strange Aura

I had this happen to me over the weekend and was wondering if anyone else has. I was talking on the phone and crocheting. Without any warning, I felt like my eyes short circuited. I felt a sensation like an electric charge (not painful) across both my eyes from temple to temple, my eyelids blinked uncontrollably, and I saw zebra-like jagged lines. All this lasted no longer than 3 seconds. I saw my neurology nurse practitioner, who diagnosed migraine aura, as did the opthamalogy neurologist I see. I have never had anything like this before, and it was rather terrifying. I have had migraines for close to 60 years, and they have changed in the last 5 years or so. They have gone from just the pounding headache to seeing visual images that are circular or half moon shaped, usually in one eye or the other, and take about 10 minutes to work their way out of my visual field. I also get patches of very bright light in the peripheral vision of my right eye, which last less than 5 minutes normally. The headache itself, when I get it (I don't always get one after the aura) isn't as intense, but seems to take longer to resolve, and I will get low grade dizziness along with it. Anyone else here with something like this?

  1. Oh my, , I can hear what a scary and disconcerting experience this was for you, especially the first time not having ever gone through something like it before! Vision changes and auras are definitely something some of our community members have with the migraine, so I hope some of the people here see your comment and chime in about their experiences. In the meantime, I wanted to share this article with you about vision changes, https://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/vision-changes, as well as this one about auras, https://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/aura. Good for you for seeking out your neurologist and ophthalmologist about this so timely! Please know that this community is here for you and your aren't alone. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
